The Best Travel Insurance for a worry-free Vacation

December 1

Travel Insurance is important to consider especially since extreme weather is happening more often, so the chances of canceling a trip due to an “Act of God” are frequent. Most European travelers consider travel insurance mandatory, but many people think they don't need it. Many things can happen before your trip, and it's better to cancel with a minimal fee. The same goes for when you are on your trip; bags go missing, delayed planes, and you may need to evacuate if there is a natural disaster or a medical emergency.

Some things to think about before buying travel insurance how are your health and what are the chances of you getting sick while traveling. Is your destination prone to extreme weather or political turmoil? If you have any doubts, it's best to have insurance.

If you travel twice or more during the year, it might be cheaper to buy annual travel insurance, which is more comprehensive. Also, remember to check your health insurance, as sometimes you might have coverage when traveling abroad.

Travel Insurance in Addition to Your Credit Card Protection

I suggested applying for Chase Sapphire Reserve in the Travel Hack article, which has trip protection benefits. Many credit cards now offer trip protection, so it’s always good to review what they offer before you buy travel insurance.

Some benefits include reimbursement of non-refundable travel purchases, delay-related expenses, and rental car collision damage waiver protection. (A side note on CDW – ask your credit card company to email you a letter stating they cover CDW. Many rental car companies are notorious for saying it’s not covered and won’t rent you a car unless you buy CDW from them. Have a printed copy with you; I do this for every trip).

Although you have some coverage with credit cards, it’s not enough if you need emergency medical treatment, transportation, or evacuation. You could easily spend over $10,000 in out-of-pocket medical expenses without it.

Whatever travel insurance you buy, remember to read the policy details to ensure it’s right for you. No travel policy fits everyone, so tailor your approach to your specific needs. It provides peace of mind knowing that you will be covered if something goes wrong.

 World Nomad’s Travel Insurance

I found WorldNomads.com when I was doing research for a trip. National Geographic and Lonely Planet recommend them, and since I like both of those publications, I decided to try them.

WorldNomads.com is an Australian-based company that provides travel insurance to travelers from over 140 countries. They offer the best coverage for the price you pay. Designed for adventure travelers with cover for overseas medical, evacuation, baggage, and adventure sports and activities. Their insurance is affordable by focusing on what you need and leaving out what you don’t. Also, while you are away, if you plan on extending your trip, you can contact them and buy more coverage until you return.

World Nomad’s Travel Insurance has two types of insurance, Explorer, which is more comprehensive, and Standard.  I have listed some of the coverage they offer to give you an idea of the two plans side by side.

Trip Protection

Explorer Plan: $10,000
Standard Plan: $2,500

Emergency Medical Insurance

Standard Plan: $25,000
