Solage Style
Solage is where you go when you need to hit the reset button; to escape to a peaceful, tranquil destination. Recently Solage went through a 30-million dollar redesign that included updating all of its cottages and spaces, making a beautiful resort even more stunning.
Drawing inspiration from the rustic charm of the surrounding Napa Valley landscapes, they incorporated natural materials and used a neutral array of colors in the redesign. Also included were more open spaces where guests can mingle and enjoy the lush, beautiful grounds, creating an air of simple sophistication.
Solage is part of the luxury Auberge Resorts group. It has two other properties in the Napa area, Stanley Ranch, a 712-acre working ranch covered in vineyards, and Auberge du Soleil; its first hotel opened in the '80s.
Location & Sound
Located on the outskirts of the picturesque town of Calistoga, just a short drive from Napa, the resort sits on 22 acres of beautifully landscaped grounds.
The nearest airports are San Francisco International, Oakland airport, and the much smaller Sonoma County airport. It's approximately a two-hour drive from both SFO and Oakland.
You can walk downtown Calistoga from the hotel, which takes about twenty minutes. The town is lovely, with small boutique shops, antique stores, great restaurants, and a lively atmosphere.
Solage is the perfect place to unwind and relax; with panoramic mountain vistas, the setting is entirely tranquil. Napa Valley, in general, is a quiet, peaceful destination. The property was tranquil most of the time when I visited. The pool area got a little noisy with people chatting, but it was not awful.
Service & Facilities at Solage
Around Solage are world-class wineries, which you can visit by bike or book one of the hotel's Mercedes-Benz convertibles. What better way to experience the Napa region then in a Mercedes convertible!
If you would like the Mercedes-Benz, book well ahead of your trip as they are popular.
One of the main features at Solage is the adults-only 130-foot outdoor swimming pool, surrounded by sun loungers and umbrellas and set against the backdrop of palm trees and beautiful countryside.
There are cabanas you can rent for a fee if you would prefer a more luxurious feel. The adults-only pool bar offers drinks and snacks during the day. There is a separate children's pool also on the property.
The award-winning spa features five geothermal pools of different temperatures, a steam room, a sauna, and an array of services, from massages to mud treatments. Spa appointments are not necessary to use the geothermal pools.
Alongside the spa, you will find a small gym with the usual machines and weights and offers complimentary yoga, pilates, or cardio classes. Look for regular spa events, including full-moon qigong, chakra-balancing, and sound meditations.
A great touch is the two bikes found outside each cottage for use on the property or if you wish to cycle to downtown Calistoga or a local winery.
This proved very helpful as my cottage was located at the far end of the property from the pool and restaurants, making it a bit of a walk. You also have a parking space outside your cottage.
I asked for a cottage far away from the pool and restaurants for a quieter, peaceful experience, and I was not disappointed. I heard nothing; it was beyond lovely, pure silence. I did not have time to use the patio area much, so I cannot attest to the sound there, but I'm sure it would be similar.
Along one side of the property is the scenic Silverado Trail, a 170-year-old route that winds over twenty-nine miles through Napa Valley, a lovely place for a relaxing walk.
Solage Guest Cottages
Solage includes 83 cottages and six one-bedroom suites, designed with casual luxury, contemporary furnishings, vaulted ceilings, private patios, and lounge furniture.
Some cottages have a fire pit and water features, and the suites have outdoor showers and hot tubs.
My cottage included a fireplace that made everything so cozy as I visited in December. The bed and bedding are beyond comfortable. Everything about the cottage was elegant, minimalist, and highly comfortable.
The bathroom included a deep bathtub, a large vanity area with two sinks and two mirrors, natural bath products, and a powerful shower with a pebble stone floor. The closet was large enough for me to put my suitcase away.
The cottages include a large television, USB ports, laptop friendly workspaces, free WiFi, a fridge with complimentary drinks, tea & coffee, a super soft bathrobe, iron, and hairdryer.
The resort is pet friendly, and for $150, they will get their own bed, bowl, and some treats!
Food & Drink
The Michelin-starred Solbar restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner; you can choose a table inside or in the lovely patio area with a 20-foot fire pit.
Solbar serves California cuisine using locally sourced ingredients, so the menu changes frequently. The food was phenomenal; every meal was delicious, which explains why it's such a favorite of the locals and guests.
In addition to Solbar, Solage opened Picobar in 2021, located by the main pool, which offers casual meals and craft cocktails. The food at Picobar was lovely, but if I were to visit again, I would eat all meals at Solbar; it was that good.
