Comme Des Garçons Converse, my favorite sneaker, resulted from a collaboration between New York graphic artist Filip Pagowski, and Rei Kawakubo. The end product resulted in an iconic sneaker that never seems out of style.
They have a great vintage look, are funky, playful, and beyond comfortable. HSPs will love this sneaker.
PROS
- Extremely comfortable
- Great vintage, funky look
CONS
- Unisex sizing can be confusing
- Sold out a lot
There's a Great History Behind Converse
Converse has been “in” since being introduced in 1917. The company was initially called the Converse Rubber Shoe Company and sold “non-skids” as the first athletic shoe aimed at basketball players. However, when Chuck Taylor joined the company sales team in 1921, they took off.
When researching this article, I did not know the history behind the white high-top model. Chuck Taylor designed the white high-top converse with patriotic red and blue trim for the 1936 Olympics.
Then, during World War II, he served as a captain in the Air Force and coached basketball teams to boost the troops' morale. He had them wear the high-top, and soon all the GIs were exercising in them. They became the official sneaker of the United States Armed Forces. An incredible history to have behind a shoe.
Despite how fashion has changed dramatically since its introduction, the converse shoe has never lost popularity. It has had to compete with an ever-expanding athletic shoe industry, yet it's still here. No matter your age, someone in your circle has a pair of converse.
I will say that although I love the style of converse and the fact that they go with everything, they were not the most comfortable shoe after wearing them all day.
They didn't have much arch support and cushion, so I would add an insole to make them more comfortable.
When I saw the $150 price tag of the Comm des Garcon converse, I thought that was ridiculous.
As I read through the reviews on the shoes, everyone commented on how comfortable they were and the enhanced cushioning. So, I bought a pair of high-tops in white.
As a HSP – will you like the Comme Des Garçons Converse?
They are incredibly comfortable, and it's not an exaggeration to say the cushioning is enhanced; I feel like I am walking on clouds if the original one had barely any cushioning, this one more than makes up for it.
I could easily walk in these all day long. They would be great to bring on a trip; you could wear them to work in nice clothes or on the weekend with jeans – whatever way you want.
These are so comfortable that if you are going on a trip to Europe to visit all the museums you can, your feet will not hurt at the end if you wear them. We all have issues finding those walking shoes that don't hurt and don't look like something our grandmothers would wear. Finally, we have good options.
The red heart is funky and cool, elevating the style factor of the shoe. However, being so popular means the shoe is sold out everywhere. Also, you have to be careful where you buy them as many fakes are sold online.
Only buy from stores you are familiar with; I purchased mine from Nordstrom. I just kept checking until they had restocked; it was only a few weeks. I feel they are worth the $150 price just from a comfort standpoint.
